Grantmaking Foundations 2001 is the best-selling guide to the most
significant independent, community and company-sponsored foundations that fund
environmental projects. These foundations give over $600 million for environmental purposes
annually.

In 1987, a group of environmental grantmakers met in Washington, D.C. to discuss common interests and to learn about each other's specific programs. As a result of the enthusiasm generated at this meeting, plans were made for future meetings, grants lists exchanged, and a "directory" of foundation program interests was published.
