Fund for Wild Nature Offers Support for Environmental Action

The Portland, Oregon-based Fund for Wild Nature (http://fundwildnature.org/ ) provides money for campaigns designed to save and restore native species and wild ecosystems, including actions to defend wilderness and biological diversity.

The fund provides support for advocacy, litigation, public policy work, development of citizen science, and similar endeavors, as well as media projects that have a clear strategic value and a concrete plan for dissemination of the final product. The fund does not support basic scientific research, private land acquisition, individual action or study, or conferences.

Special attention is given to ecological issues not currently receiving sufficient public attention and funding.

Proposals will only be accepted for projects in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The fund rarely provides grants to organizations with annual budgets greater than $250,000.

Conservation Innovation Grants

The Natural Resources Conservation Service has announced a request for proposals for the nationwide Conservation Innovation Grants competition, published in the March 29, 2004 issue of the Federal Register. Applications should demonstrate the use of innovative technologies or innovative approaches, or both, to address a natural resource concern or concerns. The five natural resource concerns for possible funding through Conservation Innovation Grants for Fiscal Year 2004 are: Water Resources, Soil Resources, Atmospheric Resources, Grazing Land and Forest Health and Wildlife Habitat. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is requesting proposals for projects that assist organizations in becoming effective co-stewards of the natural resources within the National Wildlife Refuge System. The program provides competitive seed grants ($1,500 to $5,000) to creative and innovative proposals that seek to increase the number and effectiveness of organizations interested in assisting the refuge system nationwide. The RiverSmart campaign

The River Network is making a limited number of small grants (up to $5,000) to help river and watershed organizations implement the RiverSmart campaign in their local communities. Using mass media tools, the RiverSmart campaign gives audiences simple things they can do in and around their homes to help protect the health of their local rivers. River and watershed groups can attach their own name and logo to the RiverSmart TV, radio and print ads and use the campaign to raise their organizational profile as well as to educate community members. International Paper Environmental Awards

International Paper and the Conservation Fund will provide national recognition and grants of $10,000 to two conservation/environmental education leaders through the International Paper Conservation Partnership Award and the International Paper Environmental Education Award. The unrestricted cash grants are made through the Inter- national Paper Company Foundation.

The International Paper Conservation Partnership Award is presented annually to an individual who has achieved significant results in protecting habitat through a cooperative relationship with a business or company. Nominees must have achieved significant results in protecting U.S. terrestrial or wetland habitats and demonstrated the value of cooperative partnerships between the corporate and conservation communities.

The International Paper Environmental Education Award is presented annually to an educator who has developed an innovative approach to environmental education that significantly improves student comprehension of environmental issues, fosters an understanding of the link between environmental protection and economic growth, demonstrates leadership, and inspires achievement. Potential candidates are elementary or secondary school educators or university faculty or staff members.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Invites Proposals for Active Living Research Program

Active Living Research (formerly Active Living Policy and Environmental Studies), a $12.5 million program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was created to stimulate and support research that identifies environmental factors and policies that influence physical activity. Findings are expected to inform environmental and policy changes that will promote active living among Americans.

The program seeks proposals that describe research designed to improve understanding of the environmental and policy correlates of physical activity in one or more of the following population subgroups: children and adolescents; low-income and ethnic minority groups; older adults; people with physical challenges; and residents of rural areas.

Proposals must address one of the following topics: environmental characteristics and physical activity in under-studied populations; or the impact of changes in community environments or policies on physical activity.

Proposals for cycle two funding may request up to $150,000 over two years, and Applicants may apply as a new investigator for this round of funding. In addition, funds are available for Dissertation Awards.

Preference will be given to applicants who are either public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

National Geographic Society Grants for Scientific Field Research

The National Geographic Society awards grants for scientific field research and exploration through its Committee for Research and Exploration. Sound Partners for Community Health brings together public broadcasters and community organizations to solve problems around local health and healthcare issues using a variety of programming and community engagement techniques. The program represents a partnership between the Benton Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is designed to address a core component of each foundation's mission: fostering healthy communities through collaborative use of local media. Captain Planet Foundation to Fund Environmental Projects for Children and Youth
The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to fund
and support hands-on environmental projects for children
and youth. The foundation works to encourage innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environ- mental problems in their neighborhoods and communities.

The foundation annually funds as many projects as its resources allow. Grants generally range from $250 to $2,500. All applicant organizations or sponsoring agencies must be exempt from federal taxation under section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code (this includes most schools and nonprofit organizations). All applicant projects must also promote understanding of environmental issues; focus on hands-on involvement; involve children and young adults age 6 to 18 (elementary through high school); promote interaction and cooperation within the group; help young people develop planning and problem solving skills; include adult supervision; and commit to follow-up communication with the foundation.

Deadlines for submitting grant applications are June 30, September 30, and December 31. The foundation will only accept proposals that have been submitted using the online application form. See the Captain Planet Foundation Website for complete guidelines and application instructions.

Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation Welcomes Applications for Several Community Programs to Benefit Areas in the Southeast
The Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation supports people in communities in the Southeast through three funding areas: Grassroots Leadership Development, Community Problem Solving, and Enterprise and Asset Development. In addition, the Foundation supports all of its grantees with grants and peer-led training opportunities to pursue organizational development goals.
